Questions & Answers

What is an ESS?

An ESS (Energy Storage System) is a collection of batteries, inverter(s) and other components that allow the storage of energy for later use. The term is most often used in conjunction with on-grid systems with batteries but could also be applied to off-grid systems.

An ESS (Energy Storage System) is a collection of batteries, inverter(s) and other components that allow the storage of energy for later use. The term is most often used in conjunction with on-grid systems with batteries but could also be applied to off-grid systems.

Many jurisdictions require UL9540. To get this certification, the battery and inverter must pass stringent safety tests as a pair with specific configurations. An EG4 ESS is one that has been independently certified to pass these requirements using batteries and hybrid inverters. Even if your jurisdiction does not require a UL9540, choosing a UL9540 system gives you the peace of mind that the components have been tested by an independent lab to assure they work safely together.

What is UL9540?

An ESS is a complex system with many components. Even though each component may have various UL certifications for safety and functionality, they may not operate correctly or safely together. UL9540 addresses this by defining tests that must be passed by multiple components in specific configurations and operating as a system. Consequently, a UL9540 certified system will have certified components that have also been certified to operate safely together.

What are the components of a typical ESS?

Each system will be different, but the primary components of an ESS will include batteries, a Hybrid inverter, a solar charge controller (Usually bundled in the inverter) and solar panels. A very high-level block diagram might look like this: However, there will be many other smaller components (known as the Balance Of System) that are required to set up a system properly and safely. This can include things like wires, conduit, solar panel mounting hardware, switches, and fuses.

Where does an ESS get the energy it stores?

The ESS can store energy from many different sources. The most common source of energy to be stored by an ESS is solar, but any form of energy could be used in the system: Renewable energy (Solar power, Wind power, Hydro power), Generator, Grid, Etc. An EG4 ESS is designed with a focus on energy from Solar and the Grid, and AC coupling (Generators).

What does an ESS do for me?

There are several reasons to install an ESS. Storing energy from solar or other renewable sources for times when the source is not available. Powering loads when the grid goes down. Shifting grid usage to off-peak hours. (This is also known as peak shaving) Helping Grid stability. By shifting grid usage to off peak hours, the system is helping smooth out the demand on the grid and avoid peak loads the grid cannot handle.

Can an ESS reduce my electric bill?

Yes. Shifting the demand to off-peak hours will reduce the energy purchased at higher prices. Furthermore, having a battery allows the system to store energy that is not needed at the time of production. This maximizes the usable energy from a solar array or other renewable sources.

Do I have to have solar with an ESS?

No. An ESS can be set up without solar to protect against power outage and/or do load shifting. In these cases, the system would charge the battery from the grid and either use the energy at peak periods or when the grid is down. EG4 ESS does not necessarily need solar input to be classified as an ESS under UL9540.

Can an ESS do both load shifting and backup for Grid outage?

Yes, depending on how the system is configured, it can be optimized for Load Shifting, Grid failures or a balance of both.

Can load shifting include selling stored power back to the grid during peak load times?

Yes. An ESS using a hybrid inverter that is grid interactive, it can typically be programmed to sell back to the grid at any time. Depending on the net metering program available for your utility, this can make a lot of sense financially.

What ESS systems does EG4 offer?

EG4 has UL9540 on many combinations of EG4 batteries and inverters. Furthermore, we are constantly expanding the list with new certifications and new products. Please click here to see the list of certified EG4 ESS systems.

Can I add EG4 batteries and Inverters to my existing solar system and classify it as EG4-ESS?

Yes, you can add your existing system to certified EG4 ESS and classify it as EG4 ESS system. Please contact our technical support for more information.

What if my energy needs changes in the future? Can I buy more inverter and batteries and still comply with the UL standards and regulations?

EG4 system is designed for scalability. You can always add more batteries and inverters in the near future as your energy needs grows and classify your system as certified.
